What relevance does art have in the post-truth world? Pure diversion? Social criticism? One of several competing schemes to try to make sense o fit all? The very question seems naive.
The young Polish Conceptual Artist, Mikołaj Poliński (born in Poznań, Poland in 1977) creates formal works with mathematical, painstaking precision. He absorbs the – often unfamiliar – circumstances of his site-specific projects and saturates them with his musings, memories and references to his other works. He measures and calculates, ponders and composes complex structures of ideas whose elaborate logic gives them a feeling of delicate fragility. All the pieces seem to fit intricately together. The work rebels against the spirit of its time, and yet it is infused with its current situation. Poliński harkens back to a day when art, architecture and mathematics were seen to hold the key to both wisdom and self-awareness.
In the former Custodian’s House in Lietzensee Park, the artist is surrounded by both the disruption and renewal of a construction site. For Poliński the commotion associated with the restoration of this architectural monument allows an opportunity to work unconventionally, to consider without constraints. The restoration work becomes part of his art. The artist draws with a high-powered electric drill. The result is a unique environment, with its own logic and orientation, a stage where the artist’s performative act engages in a dialogue with apparently chaotic construction efforts.
From 9 – 12 February Emerson Pop-Up and ParkHaus Lietzensee e.V.are inviting art lovers to watch Poliński at work with his drill and other tools. The event is sure to yield several surprises along the way as viewers directly experience the creative act in progress.
For the ninth time Emerson Pop-Up is organizing art activities in the historic Custodian’s House in Berlin’s Lietzenseepark to support the citizen’s initiative ParkHaus Lietzensee e.V.. Among other activities, the initiative has led a successful donation drive to fund the on-going renovation of the house
Due to the renovation efforts, visitors of the exhibit are limited to groups of ten at a time. We appreciate your understanding for these circumstances.

For German Romantics no other virtue stood out quite like wit.. Romantic wit, of course, involved much more than meer humor. Rather, it denoted a certain sharpness of mind, the experience and incisive judgment to command attention both aesthetically and in the social realm. Now centuries later, romantic wit lives on in the work of the young Berlin painter, Aaron Rahe (born in Georgsmarienhütte am Teutoburger Wald in 1986).
At first glance, Rahe’s paintings have the feel of street art or pop art, spontaneous, naive, even crude. This only serves to disarm the viewer allowing the deeper sense of the works to hit home. The artist’s critical posturing is both bitter and light-hearted at the same time.
What seems to be ingenuous actually masks calculated strategies. The viewer is led through a labyrinth of objective observation and incisive reflection. The paintings display heavy-handed finesse, reflecting a young painter’s attitude mixing, self-destructive impulses, megalomania, angst and hyperactive Internet sensibilities. The result is the self-conscious questioning of an obsessive artist blending the history of painting with the political present. Apparently crude expression reveals itself as fragile art work.
The exhibition is offered in support of the citizen’s initiative ParkHaus Lietzensee e.V. The group is driving the renovation of the historic custodian’s residence which is part of the Lietzenseepark landscaping protected as an architectural monument. Location: Parkwächterhaus in Lietzenseepark
